Chapter Thirteen

My alarm yanks me out of a sleep full of movement and men touching me. My head swims as I slap at my phone, more from the confusing images than the amount I drank last night.

I drank a lot last night.

Was that the reason I gave Peter a hand-job in the club where anyone could see us? Did anyone see? But instead of filling me with shame, I suck back a snort of laughter. What came over me? I’ve never behaved like that in my life. I never even touched Jasper’s penis until we were engaged, and now I’m grabbing at any man I can.

Jasper told me to. And so did Callie. But it wasn’t them they prompted me. I wanted to.

I feel different.

What will Jasper say, I wonder as I turn on the light. And it’s time to tell him, because we’d organized a FaceTime call for this morning, hence the early hour.

Nervous anticipation wakes me up as I run my fingers through my hair and grab my phone.

“How was your night out?” Jasper asks immediately after we connect.

“Hi.” I smile wanly. “How are you?”

“Did you go out, Gemma? Did anything happen?”

“We went to a club. It was… fun,” I say carefully,

“Did you meet anyone?”

I inhale a deep breath. “You can say that.”

“So?” The eagerness in his voice makes me shake my head. “Tell me about him. Or her. It can be her.”

“I don’t think I want a her,” I admit. “It was fine—good—with Jacey and Tia, but that’s not my thing. At least not yet.”

“He. That’s fine. I’m fine with that.” He sounds like he does when faced with a deadline and a lack of sleep, when he knows he must press on but all he wants to do is collapse into bed.

“Jasper?” I ask softly. “Are you sure you’re fine? You really want to hear this?”

“It’s only fair, Gemma.”

“We don’t have to be fair. If you want to do things… there…” I stumble over the words because I’m not sure what I’m saying. Would I be all right knowing he’s far away, enjoying himself with other people, while I’m at home, unable to take it past first base?

Maybe that was second base. I don’t know baseball, let alone baseball analogies.

Peter plays baseball with Malcolm. Maybe he can teach me.

“Do you mean that?” Jasper presses.

“No.” I sigh, the thought of Peter fading into the distance. “This is hard for me.”

“Meeting someone? You just have to be confident, Gemma. You’re a wonderful person, and gorgeous. Any man—”

“Telling you about it,” I interrupt.

“Oh.” There’s a pause as Jasper collects his thoughts. “Well, I think you have to. I want to know, just like you needed to. I think it’s worse if we don’t share. It’s more like cheating then. This way, we both know everything.”

“But do you want to know everything?” I persist.

“Do you?”

I think back to when Jasper told me about the other man. How shocked I had been, but how quickly the shock had changed to awe and something akin to pride at the bold move.
